Become A Projectionist

Learn the skills needed to become a projectionist.

A movie projectionist is the person who operates the lights, sound and, most importantly, the film projector in a movie theater. Sometimes movie projectionists will also work independently by doing private screenings at parties and events. It is hard to make a career out of being a movie projectionist, but it is a good job for anyone interested in the movie industry or high school or college students. One perk of being a projectionist is that you get to watch free movies.

Instructions

1. Take mechanical courses in high school or at your local community college. Projectionists are required to work with and maintain complex machinery, so having as much mechanical knowledge and experience as possible will help you get the job.

2. Apply for an apprenticeship at a local movie theater. Since there are no minimal education requirements to become a projectionist, most of your training will come from on-the-job experience. You can also apply to become a union projectionist after you have served at least a one-year apprenticeship and pass a union exam.

3. Apply at movie theaters in your area. Ask to speak to the manager. Let her know that you have good mechanical skills and that you have apprenticed as a projectionist.
