Castle Theme Birthday Cake Ideas

Use a real castle as inspiration for your castle cake.

To make a birthday honoree feel like a king or queen, create a castle cake. Think back to the sandcastles you once made on the beach or look at real castles for inspiration for a castle-themed birthday cake, but instead of sand and seawater, you will craft your confection from cake and icing. Set the castle cake on the table at a medieval birthday party for both a centerpiece and the dessert. Does this Spark an idea?

Sand Castle Cake

Use ice cream cones to create turrets on a sand castle cake.

Bake a sheet cake and cover it with the icing of your choice. Arrange sugar ice cream cones upside down at each of the four corners of the cake or set sugar cones inside the top of cake cones and arrange three or four sets of these as turrets to turn the cake into a castle. Cake cones have flat bottoms and might also be called wafer cones. Spread vanilla icing over the cones and the cake and cover the iced cake and cones with crushed vanilla cookies to make the castle resemble a sand castle. Add sugar cake decorations with seashell shapes as decorations around the cake to complete the sand castle theme.

Square Castle Cake with Cupcakes

Create a castle cake from a rectangular sheet cake and cupcakes. Bake a sheet cake and cut it in half. Stack the halves on top of each other and cover the entire cake with icing. Bake six cupcakes, and slice off the top to make them flat. Place four upside down cupcakes at the corners of the stacked cakes for more rounded turrets than with an ice cream cone cake. Use flat, round candies pressed to the sides of the iced cake for "tiles" or "stones" covering the exterior of the castle. Add a small plastic prince or princess figurine to complete the look of a castle.

Castle Cake Pan

Bake a cake in a greased and floured castle-shaped cake pan. Let the cake cool before removing from the pan and decorating with icing of your choice. Using a castle-shaped cake pan takes the guesswork out of decorating and provides a means of making a castle cake if you lack inspiration or time for more intricate cake models. When you remove the cake after baking, it will have a three-dimensional castle shape, and you need only to apply icing. Use cake decorator's icing packaged in tubes for applying icing into the nooks and crannies of the cake shape. Use a different colors for the castle "walls" on the shaped cake as you use on the doors and windows. Make this castle cake a haunted castle by pressing sugar ghost cake decorations onto the walls of the castle and choose dark gray and black for the icing colors for the castle.
