Write An Argumentative Paper Outline

An outline helps organize your argumentative paper.

Writing an argumentative paper can be a very challenging assignment. However, planning and research can help you effectively write an argumentative paper. One way to ensure that your paper is organized is to write an outline. An outline helps you organize your research and facts to effectively convince the reader of your argument. A good outline sets up the frame of an argumentative paper.

Instructions

1. Research your topic and write down notes, facts and figures that pertain to your argument. Attach the source information to each of your notes. For example, if you collect information from a book source, write down the title and author of the book next to your notes. Keep your notes organized by placing them in a folder or binder.

2. Organize your outline so that it has an introduction, body and conclusion. Place Roman numeral I on the page, followed by the word Introduction. Place IA on the page and follow it with the sentence that will start your paper. It should be a sentence that introduces the topic of your essay and catches the reader's interest. Place IB on the page and follow it with a summary of your paper's main points. Place IC on the page and follow it with your thesis statement. This sentence should state the argument of your paper.

3. Place a Roman numeral II on the page. This will start the body of your paper. Look through your notes and find a minimum of three arguments that you will talk about in the body of your paper. Mark the first argument with IIA and follow it with your topic sentence. Mark the supporting sentences to your argument with IIB, IIC and IID. Mark the concluding sentence to your argument with IIE. Repeat these steps for each of your body paragraphs, using Roman numerals III and IV to mark each body paragraph.

4. Place Roman numeral V on the page. This will start the conclusion of your paper. Mark your concluding sentence with VA. Summarize the thesis used in your introduction. Mark the summary of your arguments with VB. Mark your concluding sentence with VC. Ensure that your concluding sentence effectively ends your paper by expressing your argument's importance.
