Aids Awareness Grants

Millions of people throughout the world have succumbed to the effects of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS. Prevention is key to stopping the spread of this disease, and AIDS awareness grants help get that message to the public. Grants for this purpose are available from both public and private funds. AIDS awareness campaigns generally target particular at-risk groups or educate young people on ways to avoid contracting the disease.

Elton John AIDS Foundation

This famous musician established his foundation in 1992. It provides prevention, treatment and advocacy programs for people with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Administrative costs for the Elton John AIDS Foundation run only 10 percent annually, so 90 percent of funds go directly to programs. Targets for grant funding are constantly evolving as the Elton John AIDS Foundation awards money to where it makes the most significant impact. In 2010, funds were awarded to nonprofit organizations for AIDS awareness and advocacy in the rural southern U.S.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

This federal agency funds grants for HIV/AIDs prevention, and in 2010 awarded $42 million to community-based organizations across the country. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, colleges or universities, hospitals, community or faith-based organizations or recognized American Indian tribal governments or agencies. Materials used for AIDS awareness, including audio-visual, written or pictorial materials, must be submitted for review by a program review panel established by the grantee. As per the guidelines: "All programs of education and information receiving funds under this title shall include information about the harmful effects of promiscuous sexual activity and intravenous substance abuse, and the benefits of abstaining from such activities."

MTV Staying Alive Foundation

The foundation wing of this cable TV network funds grants two times a year, in December and June. Directed toward youth, only those age 27 and under may apply. Eligible projects for AIDS awareness must last at least one year. While individuals may apply for funding, the recipient must partner with a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Grant recipients receive initial funding at the inception of the project and the rest of the funds are released only after submission of an interim report detailing the work to-date.

John M. Lloyd Foundation

Created by an investment manager who later died from AIDS-related complications, the John M. Lloyd Foundation awards small grants annually to organizations worldwide. Preference is given to those organizations that increase awareness as well as support for HIV/AIDS programs. Successful AIDS awareness campaigns may be eligible for the foundation's multi-year award grant.
