A charge coupled device (or CCD) is a type of electronic image sensor found in many digital cameras. CCDs are semiconductor devices that need to be housed in an assembly in order to be mounted and connected to a circuit board.

Function
A CCD detector chip assembly generates an electrical signal representing light levels striking the surface of the chip. The electrical signal is processed by electronic circuitry in a camera (or other device) to generate a digital image.
Size
CCD detectors come in a variety of sizes. The size of the CCD detector chip assembly is based on the application. For example, a high quality digital SLR camera may have a larger CCD sensor than a mobile phone.
Considerations
