What Happens If You Refuse To Be Patted Down At The Airport

You will not be allowed past security if you refuse to be patted down.

Since the events of September 11, 2001, airport security departments have implemented many new measures to ensure the safety of passengers. Therefore, there are very few options available to passengers who refuse to be patted down at the airport. If you intend to board the plane, you must consent to be patted down when asked.

Step 1

If a security officer calls you over for a pat down and you refuse, he will explain to you the procedures and regulations. Essentially he will tell you that if you refuse the pat down you will be escorted from the security screening area by either transportation administration officers or police officers.

Step 2

Once the individual has been escorted away from the security screening area, he will once again be asked to be patted down. If he again refuses, a transportation security officer will approach him and explain that continued refusal will result in his being immediately led away from the security area. He will be told that he is being denied entry and may not try to re-enter.

Step 3

Once the individual has been denied entry, if she makes an attempt to go towards the gates, the entire TSA Security check point will be shut down. If the security check point has been forced to shut down there may even be a passenger evacuation of the terminals due to the security breach. Whether or not a passenger evacuation would occur is up to the discretion of the TSA and law enforcement officers present at the terminal.

Step 4

If a security check point has been forced to be shut down due to a security breach of an individual who refused to be patted down, there may be harsher penalties for him than simply not being allowed to catch his flight. The individual will also be considered disruptive and an interference to airport security. He is also risks both criminal and civil charges.
