Become a Body Imaging Radiologist
A Radiologist may be employed in a hospital as a Staff Radiologist or the Director of Radiology. Radiologists also work in diagnostic clinics performing a wide range of radiologic procedures. Board certification in radiology is required before becoming a body imaging radiologist. Read on to learn more.

Study to Become a Body Imaging Radiologist
1. Obtain a medical degree from an accredited school of medicine. Passing a 3-step license examination by the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination)and NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) is required before being permitted to practice medicine.
2. Become a Board Certified Radiologist. Board certification requires 5 years of post-graduate training, followed by 1 to 2 years in fellowship training programs.
3. Choose a specialty area in radiology. Enter the body imaging specialty of diagnostic radiology to diagnose and treat diseases through the means of ultrasound, x-ray, electromagnetic radiation and radionuclides.
4. Make a career in radiation oncology to treat patients with malignant tumors. This includes the therapeutic use of radiant energy to study and manage certain diseases.
5. Pursue radiologic physics as a career path into radiology for diagnostic and therapeutic body imaging. The imaging studies in this area use gamma rays from sealed sources, roentgen rays, radio frequency radiation and ultrasonic radiation.
Choose a Specialty in Radiology
6. Go through additional training to become certified in the sub-specialty of hospice and palliative care. Training provides the expertise to assess patients with life-limiting diseases and to prepare palliative care. Maximizing the quality of life while relieving the distress of the disease as much as possible is the purpose of a hospice and palliative care radiologist.
7. Choose neuroradiology to diagnose and treat diseases using body imaging procedures on the head, spine, spinal column, brain and neck.
8. Let a love for children lead you to become a pediatric radiologist. This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the growth and development in children of all ages from newborn through adolescence. Body imaging and interventional procedures are required to diagnose and treat diseases in children.
9. Find nuclear radiology interesting to a radiologist who prefers the science of analysis. Imaging and treatment of disease using radionuclides and radiolabeled substances are part of the work of a nuclear radiologist.
