Interventional Radiography Schools

Interventional radiographers use balloons, catheters, microcatheters, stents, therapeutic embolization or deliberately clogging up a blood vessel, on patients previously diagnosed as inoperable.

Interventional radiologists use state of the art technology to visualize and repair internal body areas previously accessible only through invasive surgery procedures. The use of use of balloons, catheters, microcatheters, stents, therapeutic embolization or deliberately clogging up a blood vessel, has offered new treatment options for patients previously diagnosed as inoperable. Radiologists are no longer the only specialists performing these techniques as cardiologists, surgeons and urologists are skilled practitioners in interventional radiology. Physicians continue their training in these specialties, learning new techniques after receiving their medical degree.

Medical University of South Carolina

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is the largest teaching hospital in South Carolina. MUSC was recently ranked among the top 100 best hospitals in the nation. The Department of Radiology and Radiological Science functions as an academic department within the College of Medicine. The Division of Interventional Radiology operates within the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science. Each year, eight residencies are made available in the radiology department. Competition is stiff for these prized positions. MUSC offers several Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and non-ACGME fellowships each year that include three interventional radiology fellowships.
