Radiology Technician Programs Near Huntsville Al

You can pursue radiology training in Huntsville, Ala.


Radiology refers to the application of radioactive substances and radiation technology in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions and diseases. Its most commonly known form is x-ray imaging. Highly trained allied health professionals are required to perform radiologic testing and treatments. According to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, there are two accredited training programs for aspiring radiology technicians in Huntsville, Ala. A third program is found approximately 40 miles south of the city.


Crestwood Medical Center


Crestwood Medical Center is a general surgical hospital that offers a two-year certificate program in medical radiography at their School of Radiology. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED and submit SAT or ACT scores, three letters of reference and a statement of interest. Students are trained to perform various diagnostic, fluoroscopic, surgical and portable x-ray procedures. The school aims to provide both didactic classroom instruction in radiographic science, problem-solving and critical thinking in addition to hands-on development of psychomotor and technological skills.

Huntsville Hospital


The School of Radiologic Technology at Huntsville Hospital offers a 24-month certificate program in radiologic technology. Established in 1969, this program is only available through full-time study that includes both classroom instruction and clinical rotations. Applicants must complete prerequisites in math, anatomy and physiology, English and the liberals arts or behavioral sciences with a minimum grade of "C" in each course. Four letters of reference, the Health Occupations Aptitude examination and a personal essay are also required. Coursework includes patient care, radiography procedures and anatomy, radiation safety and protection, image interpretation, medical terminology, image processing, radiation physics, radiographic pathology and computed tomography (CT).

Wallace State Community College


Located approximately 40 miles from Huntsville, Wallace State Community College offers an associate in applied science degree in diagnostic imaging. This five-semester program trains aspiring radiologic technologists in all aspects of x-ray and imaging procedures through both theoretical classroom instruction and hands-on applications in a clinical setting. Applicants must complete coursework in English composition, the humanities, anatomy and physiology, algebra and psychology with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Coursework include imaging equipment, patient care, radiographic procedures, exposure principles, radiation protection and image evaluation.
