Cancer Awareness Crafts

Cancer awareness crafts can be made in colors specific to the type of cancer.

Crafters use their talents to create cancer awareness crafts to celebrate and embrace cancer survivors and cancer research and to honor those who lost the battle with this deadly disease. Cancer awareness gifts and novelties are often made in cancer-specific colors (like pink ribbons or lapel pins) and have become popular for displays, jewelry, clothing, stuffed animals, etc. Such crafts are not only inexpensive and easy to make, but they are great items to sell at fundraisers and other events.

Quilt Blocks

Quilt blocks can be used to piece together an entire quilt or to make a pillow cover or wall-hanging. A popular quilt theme is to cut ribbon shape from the desired color of fabric. Either by sewing, or by using fabric glue, attach the ribbon onto the center of a 12-inch or 18-inch square of fabric. Other ideas include cutting and attaching heart, angel, or bear shapes onto a fabric square. Cancer, leukemia and Relay for Life designs can be found pre-printed on fabric. These prints work well for a background or backing for a quilt block.

Cancer Awareness Ribbons

Choose a ribbon in the color of the cancer you are highlighting. Make a loop with ends hanging down on both sides.. Glue or use a safety pin to hold the ribbon in the place. A variety of widths and lengths of ribbon can be used to make this item. A pin backing or safety pin holds the ribbon onto clothing. A smaller piece of ribbon can be attached to the loop of the ribbon to form a hanger for display on a purse handle, inside a vehicle or to hang it from a cabinet handle.

Sun-catchers

Plastic or glass ornaments in the shape of hearts or angels can be painted with glass paints to display in a window or inside a vehicle. Crafters can cut a ribbon shape from clear plastic or milk jugs. Smooth the edges with sandpaper. Then, use permanent markers or glass paints to add color to the ribbon shape, or to a meaningful shape that honors a cancer patient or caregiver.

Beading

Beads are available in many sizes, colors and materials. Children can string plastic pony beads onto elastic to make simple bracelets and key chains. Pony beads can also be pushed onto chenille stems, then bent into ribbon shapes. Crafters can use different types of beads make items in desired colors. Teardrop glass beads can be strung onto jewelry wire with proper fittings to make a necklace and earring set or a brooch pin.

Thread Items

Crocheters can use a ribbon pattern to make crocheted bookmarks, pins, or hanging ornaments. Older children and teens can combine colors to braid bracelets from embroidery floss. These crafts can be given out during a cancer awareness event, or sold to raise funds to support cancer research.
