Fentanyl Patch Information

Fentanyl is the generic name for Duragesic. It is a narcotic analgesic that is used to treat patients with chronic pain. It is given in a patch and can be habit forming.


Warnings


Fentanyl should not be used for short-term pain and should not be used in children under 12. In the event that gel leaks from the patch, it should not be touched, and if you do touch it, you should thoroughly wash the skin right away.


Usage


Each patch can be used for 72 hours and should be applied to a clean, dry place on the upper arm or back.


Side Effects


Side effects of Fentanyl include drowsiness, stomach upset, flushing, constipation and dizziness.


Drug Interactions


Fentanyl may interact with types of antidepressants, sleeping aids, muscle relaxers, sedatives or tranquilizers.


Overdose


Symptoms of overdose are drowsiness, loss of consciousness, deep sleep, clammy skin, slowed breathing and slowed heart rate. If overdose is suspected, the user should remove the patch right away and call poison control.
