Cancer Awareness Strategies

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Cancer is a growing epidemic in the United States. To help people understand the causes, treatments and symptoms of various cancers, strategies must be developed to increase awareness. The ideas outlined below could make a difference in your community and beyond.

Pamphlets

When you want to increase awareness of any issue, it is important to have information readily available to distribute. Create pamphlets that explain the causes, symptoms and treatments of cancer. Remember, cancer is a disease that no one chooses, so word the pamphlets tactfully. Creating the pamphlets with your family can help raise household awareness, as children and spouses can be actively involved in helping with research and design. Distribute the pamphlets at social functions or around your neighborhood.

Bake sale

If you want to increase cancer awareness in your community, hold a bake sale. Get a local women's group to hold a bake sale for breast cancer by inviting them to throw a party in a local gymnasium or church. Provide games, food and fun while informing your neighbors about how cancer affects the body and the lives of people who have it. Invite nurses and persons suffering from cancer to come and speak. Donate the proceeds to a cancer research fund.

Internet

The internet is a great place to educate a larger audience about cancer, but remember to keep it fun and personal. Create a website, start Facebook and Twitter pages, and encourage your friends and family to share your posts to push the message further. If you can, create short films and games to load on your pages to make them more entertaining.
