Dental Assistants in Michigan can complete coursework at several colleges to prepare for their certification.
Dental Assistants provide dental care for patients, working under the supervision of a licensed dentist. In Michigan, dental assistants are allowed to provide a long list of services, including placement of sealants and temporary crowns, removing sutures and patient education. Several colleges in mid-Michigan offer dental assistant programs. In addition, some high schools offer dental assistant programs.
Baker College
Baker College offers a dental assisting program at its Port Huron campus. Students who successfully complete the program will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in dental assisting. The program prepares participants to sit for both a national and a state board exam. The Dental Assisting National Board Exam results in a Certified Dental Assistant credential; the State of Michigan Board Exam nets a Registered Dental Assistant credential. Baker College's Dental Assisting Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Students in the program complete 90 hours of coursework, including 58 hours specific to the dental assisting program.
