Several junior colleges can be found in Minneapolis and its suburbs.
There are two tiers of public colleges in Minnesota. Students at four-year colleges earn bachelor's or master's degrees. Junior colleges, which are also known as community colleges or technical institutes, are two-year colleges where students earn certificates, diplomas or associate's degrees. In Minnesota, the Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State College and Universities (MnSCU) has authority over junior colleges.
Hennepin
Hennepin Technical College has a campus in Brooklyn Park, a suburban area of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It offers programs in several areas of business, information technology, construction, landscape, public safety, manufacturing, transportation, child development, media communications and various health careers.
The college has an open enrollment admissions policy, which means they accept anyone who applies. SAT or ACT test scores aren't considered. A standard placement test is required and is used to help place students in appropriate courses.
In 2010-2011, tuition rates started at around $144 per credit.
MCTC
Minneapolis Community and Technical College, located in downtown Minneapolis, offers many unique programs like cinema production, homeland security specialist and air traffic control. MCTC prides itself on creating programs that meet the demands of the current job market. More traditional programs include accounting, dental assistant, welding and barbering.
Some programs can be completed in as little as three months. A high school diploma or GED are required to apply. Some programs, like the air traffic control, have additional requirements. Online and evening courses are also available.
In 2010-2011, tuition rates started at around $151 per credit.
Normandale
Normandale Community College offers a wide range of academic programs at its campus in Bloomington, Minnesota, located 9 miles outside of Minneapolis. Courses are available in 50 different areas, including anthropology, computer science, dental hygiene, hospitality management, law enforcement, nanotechnology, philosophy, radiologic technology, theater and world languages.
In 2010, full-time students could expect to pay about $21,300 per year.
Anoka Ramsey
Anoka Ramsey Community College is located in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. The college has programs of study in business, accounting, social services, biology, engineering, computers, nursing, music, art, education and social services.
Prospective students can apply online. Following acceptance, students must complete a placement test, which is used to help determine what courses to take. An online orientation program is required for all students taking at least eight credits the first semester.
In 2010-2011, tuition for in-house courses started at around $130.
