Breast Reduction Techniques

Patients who undergo breast reduction surgery often are looking for relief from physical symptoms such as pain from the excess weight of large breasts. Breast reduction usually solves these problems and improves the size and shape of your breasts. Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts will become proportional to the rest of your body and your clothes will fit better. Does this Spark an idea?

Breast Reduction Techniques

Breast reduction in women is done especially for those that suffer from pain and discomfort from heavy breasts. It may also be performed to correct breasts of two different sizes. Bilateral breast reduction is done to reduce the size of both breasts, while unilateral breast reduction is performed on only one breast.

Men may also go for breast reduction especially in cases such as gynecomastia, which is caused by hormonal imbalances or for beautifying and cosmetic purposes as well.

Below are a couple of different methods for breast reductions done primarily in women.

The Pedicle Method

This method is the most common method used for breast reduction. In this method, the overall shape and size of the breast is reduced, while the functions and sensation in the breasts remain unchanged. Pedicle method also consists of other techniques like McKissock and LeJour. These techniques are different because they have a different scar pattern. There are also other names for pedicle method such as, anchor method, T-scar, T-incision, etc.

You need to discuss these various methods with your surgeon before making a decision.

Different pedicle methods vary from one another depending on the way the blood flow and nerves are arranged in different areas of the breast. This can be done so from the top, center, bottom or side of the breast. With a typical pedicle method, the nipple sensation and milk productions are preserved in every possible way. But if the patient has very large breasts, then it might be useful to go with the free nipple graft procedure (FNG).

FNG: Free Nipple Graft

As the name suggests, in this procedure, the nipple is removed and then grafted in its new location as a skin graft. For this very reason, if a patient has had FNG and might require breast surgery again in the future, she needs to inform the surgeon of this previous history so the surgeon does not mistake it for a pedicle method breast reduction.

Different Breast Reductions Procedures and Incisions Patterns

Keyhole Incision Pattern of Pedicle Breast Reduction:

This type of incision goes around the areola and is more often used for breast lifts and minor breast reductions.

Liposuction:

As the name suggests, the breast reduction is done by simple liposuction, which is a surgical technique involving the removal of excess fat from deposits between the skin and muscle thus toning and reshaping the breast

Stevens Laser Bra

This is a more advanced technique developed by Dr. W. Grant Stevens for breast reduction in women. He uses laser to generate an "internal bra" to support the breast system thus providing shape and structure to a heavy sagging breast.

There are many types of breast reduction techniques and you should consult your surgeon to determine which method best suits you.
