Write An Ampersand

Use an ampersand in place of the word "and."

The ampersand is a character used to replace the word "and" in English, French and German writing. According to the Ohio State University Styleguide, the ampersand symbol is used between two names of a business entity and letters used to abbreviate expressions, such as "R&R" for rest and relaxation. Academically the ampersand is also used when citing sources in-text for brevity. In modern culture the ampersand is used as a design or artistic element and also as a section of the Canadian National Post.

Instructions

1. Draw a diagonal line from right to left. The line should be slanted upwards at approximately a 90 degree angle. A slight curve in the line is acceptable.

2. Draw a loop from the top and around to the right and back down towards the left connecting it to the middle of the diagonal line.

3. Draw another curve under the diagonal line down towards the left and around and up to the right. The curve ends once you have crossed the diagonal line again near the end of the diagonal line. The connected curves resemble a backwards "S" connected with the top of the diagonal line.

4. Practice making ampersands until you are comfortable making the full ampersand with one pen stroke. The ampersand will begin to reflect your writing style and personality.
