Uneven Breast Growth

Woman hiding breasts

Estrogen causes a female to begin to develop breasts during puberty. Generally, breasts grow relatively evenly. However, some women discover that their breasts appear to look different from each other.

Effects

A woman who has uneven breast growth has breasts that are different in size, shape and position.

Causes

Causes of uneven breast growth include genetic tendencies and events such as pregnancy or menopause during which a woman's estrogen levels greatly fluctuate.

Identification

To identify whether or not a woman has uneven breast growth and whether or not she would benefit from treatment, a doctor will perform a physical examination in which the breasts are measured.

Treatment

Treatment for uneven breast growth is surgery. Surgery is only recommended if there is at least one cup size difference between the breasts.

Considerations

Uneven breast growth is common. For most women, the amount of uneven growth is so minimal that it is not noticeable to others.
