Early Signs Of Rheumatoid Arthritis

The early stages of chronic diseases often go unnoticed because the signs and symptoms they inflict seem unimportant. Many patients ignore, or are unaware of, the significance of their symptoms and don't seek treatment until the disease has reached greater levels of severity. Early detection and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis can prevent joint deformity and give greater quality of life to patients suffering from this disease.

Significance

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that attacks the joints of the body. Causing pain and eventual damage or deformity in the joints, RA does not currently have a cure. Pain management strategies and medications that control and limit the disease's progress are used in treatment methods.

Early Warning Signs

Fatigue, low fever, morning stiffness and weight loss can be symptoms of many different diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, visit your primary care physician, as these may be early warning signs of rheumatoid arthritis.

Joint Pain

Joint pain and swelling, particularly in smaller joints like the ones in your hands and fingers, wrists or feet, is an early sign of rheumatoid arthritis. Swelling often occurs in more than one joint simultaneously. The affected joints may be hot to the touch, red or puffy. Joint mobility may also be affected.

Diagnosis

Your doctor can run tests to confirm a diagnosis of RA. Blood tests, X-rays and lab analysis of the fluid in affected joints are all methods that can detect the presence of rheumatoid arthritis.

Support

Many different support groups and educational resources exist for people who have rheumatoid arthritis. Dealing with a chronic condition can be intimidating; don't be embarrassed to seek out help. If you've been diagnosed with this disease, or know someone who has, explore the links in the Resources section to find out more.
