The Effects Of Radiation Therapy

There are many different side effects of radiation therapy, some more severe than others. Most effects are confined to the treated area, short-term, and are not serious.

Effected Area

Due to the fact that radiation therapy is a directed and local treatment to a specific area on the body, the side effects are most commonly confined to the area which is being treated.

Hair Loss

One of the most common and well known effects of radiation therapy, hair loss occurs only on the area being treated.

Emotional Effects

Radiation therapy often causes patients to feel exhausted, depressed, frustrated, alone, helpless, or a combination of negative feelings. Popular help is found by attending a support group specially created for those undergoing radiation therapy.

Skin Problems

Throughout therapy, your skin may become or appear irritated, red, swollen, blistered, or sunburned in the area being treated. Most cases of skin-related side effects go away within a few weeks after treatment is stopped.

Long-Term Side Effects

Most side effects of radiation therapy are short-term, but those that are long-term can have more serious repercussions on your body. Long-term side effects can include damage to normal cells inside the body and fluid build-up, leading to swelling.

What to Do

There are many ways to improve your condition while undergoing radiation therapy. Getting rest, eating well, and taking care of the skin of the treated area are all ways to take care of yourself while being treated.
