Cost of Having a Baby in a Hospital
When you first find out you are pregnant, your initial feeling is joy. You don't think you can possibly wait nine months for your precious angel to be in your arms. Sure, you know you have a lot of preparation ahead and many items to purchase before she arrives, but the one thought that generally evades everyone is what the hospital will charge you to wrap your bundle of joy in one of their million dollar blankies. Just to give you a heads up, you are charged for nearly everything, including the wheelchair ride from the hospital entrance to your labor room.
Insured Vaginal Delivery
In a study done by the March of Dimes, those who are insured will pay, on average, $463.00 for a vaginal delivery without complications.
Insured C-Section
In the same study completed by the March of Dimes, the average cost of a c-section for those with insurance is $563.00.
Unisured Vaginal Delivery

Unisured C-Section
A c-section for the uninsured will cost about the same as a vaginal with complications; between $14,000 and $25,000 dollars.
Labor Room
Hospitals charge by the hour for the labor rooms. On average, the cost is $120 dollars.
Nursery Care
Once the baby is born, provided they have no special needs, their bill for the nursery is between $1500 and $4000 dollars. If the baby is premature or has health problems, the costs of neonatal care can start in the tens of thousands and range into the hundreds of thousands.
Considerations
These costs do not reflect the use of any medications that may be used to induce labor or relieve pain during labor. In addition, if the mother intends to have a tubal ligation after the birth, she can expect to pay another $4,000 in addition to the costs of delivering her baby.
