When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, the first thing to hit you is shock. Then you start to worry. The loss of employment to deal with the illness and the cost of treatment becomes a huge concern, but there are places you can get help.
Government Programs
The federal government sponsors the Hill-Burton Program. Administered through local hospitals, the program provides free to low-cost care for low-income families. Check with your local hospital to see if you qualify.
CancerCare
CancerCare is a non-profit, national organization dedicated to the support of individuals with cancer and their families. The organization offers cancer patients a number of services, including financial assistance for medication and some treatments.
The Avon Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Both the Avon Foundation and Susan G. Komen for the Cure offer grants to women facing breast cancer. Grants cover everything from medical care to medication, but many are administered through hospitals. Check with your local health provider or a cancer support organization like CancerCare to find out what's available in your area.
National Organizations
A number of national organizations, like the United Way, provide individual grants to help with the cost of medication, treatment and wigs. The American Cancer Society keeps a running record of many of these organizations and provides information to patients through their local offices regarding the various types of assistance available.
Local Organizations
Financial assistance may be right around the corner. Many local programs, like the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation in Philadelphia, help patients cover non-medical expenses such as rent, utility bills and childcare.
