Massage License Requirements In Arizona

Arizona requires 700 hours of education to become licensed.

Massage therapy is an industry in high demand and job opportunities are plentiful. Training and education is necessary to become a successful and knowledgeable massage therapist. A massage license is required by the state of Arizona to work in a spa, massage clinic and even to operate your own business. It not only reflects your certification as a professional, it reassures clients and potential employers that you uphold the highest standards of massage and follow rules and regulations required by the state.

Qualifications

To apply for a massage license in Arizona, you must have completed a total of 700 hours of massage education at an accredited institution. This is also a requirement for applicants that studied or hold a massage license from another state. Transcripts reflecting 700 total clock hours will need to be sent directly to the Arizona State Board of Massage Therapy.

Notarized Application

Complete an application and have it notarized and signed. Supporting documentation must be attached to the application. These documents are the complete fingerprint card, a copy of high school diploma/transcripts (or GED), proof of citizenship/ID card, and an original color photo (passport size, head shot). Include either a money order or cashier's check (these are your only payment options) to pay the required fee. This fee covers the application, license and fingerprint background check. Mail your application to the address listed below.

Renewals

A massage license must be renewed every two years. To renew the license, at least 25 hours of continuing education (CE) must be completed. This includes 12 hours of distance/correspondence learning and 13 hours of any workshop, seminar, lecture or class related to massage. These courses must be offered by an "approved provider" by the NCBTMB (National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork), massage association, or any massage school or community college offering massage training. A renewal fee will be furnished and must be a money order or cashier's check. If a massage license is not renewed, it will expire and additional fees will be furnished to reinstate the license. It is unlawful to practice massage therapy in Arizona without a required license.

Massage Insurance

As a massage therapist, you must maintain insurance to protect you and your business. You may also be asked to provide your own insurance if you work for a massage clinic or spa. Some massage insurance providers include newsletters or magazines with their memberships that keep you informed about continuing education courses, seminars and conferences.
