List Of Ultrasound Tech Schools In Houston

Ultrasound technicianss are currently in high demand.

The field of ultrasound, also referred to as diagnostic medical sonography, is an area of diagnostic medicine currently in high demand. Individuals looking for training programs as an ultrasound technician should verify that the program chosen has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) to ensure that they will be receiving the proper skills needed to pass the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) exams. There are currently two programs in Houston that meet these criteria.

Houston Community College

Students who attend the 16-month certification program for diagnostic medical sonographers at Houston Community College will be eligible to apply for the ARDMS exams upon completion. Passing these exams allows the candidate to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).

During the course of the program, students can expect to gain valuable hands-on experience by participating in clinical settings throughout the city. Hopeful applicants must have completed a two-year patient oriented allied health education program prior to application. Eligible students will be contacted for a personal interview followed by a physical exam, drug screen and background check before being admitted to the program.

Sanford-Brown College--Houston

The Houston campus of Sanford-Brown College is also CAAHEP accredited and also allows students to attend the ARDMS exams after completing the program. Program length at Sanford-Brown is flexible. It is important to note that not all Sanford-Brown Colleges that offer the diagnostic medical sonographer program are accredited.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is structured around on-campus and off-campus activities designed to give attendees the necessary skills to perform the tasks expected of an entry level ultrasound tech. On-campus activities include lecture and lab modules and off-campus activities are comprised of integrated clinical sessions designed to give students practical field experience. The program will train students to examine major areas of interest, such as the abdomen and pelvis, and will also introduce the basics of vascular ultrasound.

Other Considerations

The profession of ultrasound technician is subdivided into four main categories: cardiac, obstetrical, vascular, and general sonographer. At the time of submission, the programs in Houston are currently offering certification in the field of general sonography. This will allow successful applicants to practice in the areas of abdominal and/or obstetric and gynecologic sonography.
