Sonography or ultrasound is a medical procedure used to make video images of different parts of the body. Some of the best certified sonography schools include Miami-Dade College, University of Iowa and Weber State University. The schools certify a student as a sonography technician and all have two-year programs designed for the working student. Sonography is used in different medical fields.
Obstetrics/Gynecology Sonography
Sonography is used in the obstetrics or gynecology medical field to determine and visually inspect the female reporductive system. This is the most common type of sonography because it is also used to view the baby as it grows inside the womb. Miami-Dade College, for example, has a two-year associate degree program that the student can complete and be eligible to take the examination to become a licensed obstetrics or gynecology sonographer. The sonography student takes classroom courses in general education as well as hands-on training in the sonography of obstetrics and gynecology.
Neurosonography
Neurosonography is the type of sonography used in making images of the brain and spinal cord. This type of sonographer works to capture images of the brain and send those images on to the neurologist to make a diagnosis. Weber State has a sonography certification program in this type of sonography as well as a bachelor's degree program for students wanting to explore other types of sonography. The certified sonography course at Weber State requires the individual to be a registered technologist before being eligible for the certified sonography course.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography is the sonography used to image the heart, heart valves and blood vessels. This imaging is used by heart surgeons to diagnose and operate on heart patients. Most certified sonograpers working in this are required to have a bachelor's degree in radiation science. The University of Iowa has one of the top radiation science programs in this type of sonography through the Carver College of Medicine. This program trains the student in all types of sonography and can specialize in echocardiography. The four-year degree program qualifies the student to take the certification examination for echocardiography.
Ophthalmology Sonography
Ophthalmology sonography is a type of ultrasound technique using visual imaging to evaluate the eye and the eye muscles. This type of sonographer works with ophthalmologists to help evaluate eye diseases, eye muscle problems or retina problems. Ferris University offers a program in ophthalmology sonography that qualifies the student to take the certification exam in this type of sonography. The course at Ferris University requires 80 credit hours of classroom prerequisite courses as well as practical sonography courses in ophthalmology.
