Health Insurance For Low Income Seniors

Low income senior citizens are eligible for Medicare and Medicaid health insurance. Both programs are partly funded by the federal government. Medicaid is managed at the state level, and Medicare is managed at the federal level.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A enrollment is automatic when people turn 65 unless it is declined. It is free for qualified individuals and covers most expenses associated with hospitalization.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B must be signed up for and covers basic health care expenses. The premium is determined by the individual's income level.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D provides prescription coverage and can be purchased during the open enrollment period. Premiums are based on the plan selected.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is a comprehensive plan that includes Parts A, B, and D. Premiums are based on the plan selected. Premiums for Parts B, C, and D are usually deducted from the insured's retirement income check.

Medicaid

Medicaid is also a health insurance option for low income seniors. There are usually premiums charged for Medicaid coverage.

Dual Eligibility

When a senior citizen is eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, the two programs work together as a comprehensive health insurance plan to provide broad coverage.
