About Mammography Technologists

About Mammography Technologists

Mammography technologists are an important link in a patient's medical care. They work in a fast-paced environment and their training allows them to perform diagnostic procedures that no one else can. They do not need a full four year college degree, and have the opportunity to make a difference in a lot of lives.

Function

Mammography technologists operate a special type of x-ray that takes a radiogram. The equipment is designed to detect early stage breast cancer. Mammography Technologists cannot give a diagnosis. A diagnosis can only be given by a doctor and in this case it is a radiologist. With advanced study and experience, they can help in analyzing the data.

Significance

Mammography technologists are an important link between the patient and the doctor. They are the ones who explain the process. In many cases, the patient will not have seen an oncologist yet . They will only see one if the mammography detects an abnormality. Mammography technologists can answer some questions but they cannot give an opinion on what the diagnoses will be.

Features

Mammography technologists must be high school graduates and then become certified. This requires advanced study such as an associated degree in Radiologic Technology. In some states mammography technologists need to be licensed. In all cases, you would need to conduct mammograms under supervision, and pass a board exam in order to become certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Mammography technologists have to be compassionate and like to work with people. First time patients will be nervous and they need to be able to help them put their fears into prospective.

Potential

There is the potential for mammography technologists to advance in their careers. They can become mammography supervisors or a quality management technologist. This requires both extra training and experience. The specialist is able to analyze the data collected and monitor the system and solve any problems that may arise. The earning potential is excellent also. With some experience, and depending on the area of the country, Mammography technologists can expect to earn as much as $58,000 according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Warning

As a mammography technologist you would be exposed to low doses of radiation. The technologist does wear lead aprons and gloves and must measure the amount of exposure every time a procedure is done. Also there are advancements being made in the field that are leading to new and more advanced procedures. You should be prepared to undergo further training as they become used more. But a mammography technologist would find that easy to do.
