Career Mapping In Nursing

Career mapping helps a nurse organize her thoughts and goals.


Career mapping is a means for a nurse to organize her thoughts and evaluate her career goals. Life changes and personal growth expert Mark McClure recommends using one keyword for each goal.


Assessment


A nurse should assess her career needs and desires.


Nurse Week offers a four-phase approach to career mapping. Phase one is assessment, essentially looking at your position or situation and deciding what you like and dislike and assessing the skills you enjoy using and the nursing areas that most appeal to you.


Planning


Creating an action plan based on her goals is an important step for a nurse mapping her career.


In the second phase, create an action plan based on your goals. Set tasks to help you achieve them. Investigate other heath care facilities and available positions, and explore educational options. Be aware of the skills and abilities you'll need to move forward, and develop them.


Implementation


Implementing her action plan can help a nurse make a life change.


Phase three is implementation. Armed with you personal assessment and goals, research your areas of interest. Network with other nurses, think about questions you want to ask about positions or facilities and pursue any additional education you need. Talk with nurses working in the types of positions that interest you.


Evaluation


Evaluating her process will give a nurse a view of how she is doing.


The last phase is evaluation. Consider your skills and abilities, as well as your strengths and weaknesses. If you have interviewed for positions, determine how well you did and what you might have done differently.
