Lidoderm Side Effects

Lidoderm medicine can help with post shingle pain.

Although lidoderm can help relieve pain from shingles and other conditions, using too much of it can prove dangerous. Applying lidoderm to skin that has been burned, cut or damaged can result in severe side effects, since lidoderm can enter the bloodstream through the broken skin much faster and damaged skin can be more irritated by this drug.

Lidoderm

Lidoderm is an anesthetic. It works in the body by blocking nerve signals. By numbing the skin with lidoderm, medical procedures---like getting stitches---can be undertaken. But using too much lidoderm can prove fatal and is a greater possibility when the individual is using this product without medical supervision.

However, according to Drugs.com, there have been actual cases in which overdose occurred as a result of women being given numbing medication for a mammography. But lidoderm is also used for the pain experienced after shingles. However, it should not be used during the blister portion of shingles and the skin should not be covered with wraps or bandages after application.

Death

The most dangerous side effect of lidoderm use (overdose) can lead to death and occur due to overuse. It only takes a small amount of this drug to numb an area. If lidoderm is being used for pain experienced post shingles, it should not be liberally applied, since it can enter the blood stream through the skin.

In fact, a medical professional should be consulted about the exact application amount to be applied prior to this products use, in order to avoid a fatal side effect. Other symptoms of overdose besides death are also serious and should prompt an individual to seek immediate medical attention.

Other Overdose Symptoms

Coma, seizures, convulsions, uneven heartbeats and respiratory failure (when an individual stops breathing) can all be symptoms of overdose of lidoderm. Avoid applying lidoderm to any skin that contains cuts or is irritated---like shingle outbreaks---or that is swollen, damaged or burned in any way.

Other Side Effects

Skin irritation, redness, swelling, drowsiness, blurred vision, confusion and tremors can all be experienced as side effects of lidoderm. If lidoderm is used in conjunction with certain medications, adverse reactions can occur. These drugs include Mexitil, Norpace, Tambocor, Tonocard and Procan.

Lidoderm Patch Side Effects

Rash, hives, itching, mood and mental changes, as well as nervousness are possible side effects of using lidoderm patches. Other possible, and more serious side effects of this type of lidoderm include difficulty breathing, tightness within the chest, hearing changes, ringing in the ear, shallow breathing, vision changes and vomiting.

Significance

One form of lidoderm (lidocaine) is used to treat sunburn.

Lidoderm---which is also known as lidocaine topical in a milder formulation---has been used to help with sunburn pain, poison ivy, insect bites and skin irritations. It has even been used for treating sores located in the mouth.
