Penn Foster Career School, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, offers an online basics certification program in crime scene investigation that uses computer simulation, in addition to the traditional teaching procedures, to educate students on the practices and procedures used at a crime scene. There are no admission prerequisites for this program. Coursework involves the investigation of two crime scenes via simulation software. There are a total of five lessons within this program which include the basics of crime scene investigation, crime scene assessment and documentation, processing skills and techniques, special scene analysis and reconstruction and the crime scene lab activity.

University of California--Riverside
The Riverside extension of the University of California offers a crime scene investigation certificate program. There are no prerequisites to take this course. Students learn the basics of crime scene investigation, including obtain samples and photographic evidence as well as recover evidence at a crime scene. The program can be completed in eight to 12 months; periodically, there are intensive formats that are offered where students can complete the program in four weeks. This intensive four-week program is held during the summer and includes field trips to the DOJ crime lab in Riverside, the San Bernardino Office of the Coroner, the City of Riverside CSI Lab and weekly lectures from experts in the field.

Keiser University
Keiser University, in Daytona Beach, Florida, offers an Associate of Science degree in crime scene technology for students interested in a career as a crime scene investigator. There are no prerequisites for admission to this program. Students locate, develop, preserve, collect and analyze, as well as present, physical evidence using modern methods for identification in forensics.
