Marine technologists maintain and repair ship equipment
Marine technologists oversee and maintain all equipment on a ship or boat, including engines, boilers, refrigerating and electrical equipment. They supervise the ship's crew members, provide technical instructions, test and repair malfunctioning machinery. Marine technologists are the mechanics of a boat and they are present on the ship at all times. The salary of these specialists depends on their exact marine specialty and location.
Average Salary
The average salary of a marine technologist in 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), was $69,420 a year. This average is broken down as follows: the lowest 10th percentile earned $35,030 a year, the next 25th percentile made $45,560, the median 50th percentile got $63,630, the 75th percentile category received $84,010, and the top money-making 90th percentile earned $109,310.
Salary by Employer
The water transportation industry, including sea and lakes, was the largest and highest-paying employer of marine technologists in 2009, according to the BLS. The average salary there was $76,990 a year. Companies providing support activities to the water transportation industry were the second largest employers and also among the top-paying industries, with an annual average of $66,620.
The inland water transportation industry and state governments were also in both top five lists of largest and highest-paying employers, with average salaries of $65,310 and $68,180 per year, respectively.
States
Marine technologists earned top dollar working in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Florida, with annual mean wages ranging from $73,480 to $118,790. Florida was also one of the states with the highest concentrations of these specialists per 1,000 workers in 2009, according to the BLS.
Cities
Baltimore, Maryland, was the highest-paying city for marine technologists in 2009, according to the BLS. The annual salary there averaged $124,930 a year. Two cities in California -- Oakland and Los Angeles -- also paid top annual mean wages, $85,540 and $77,770 a year, respectively. Other top-paying cities in 2009 included Chicago, Illinois, ($82,340) and New Orleans, Louisiana, ($81,870). New Orleans was also in the top five list of cities with the highest concentrations of these professionals.
