Colleges That Offer Ultrasound Tech Classes

Work with patients as an ultrasound technician.

Ultrasound technologists, also known as diagnostic medical sonographers, use high-frequency sound waves to diagnose, treat and prevent medical conditions, according to the Mayo Clinic. Electronic equipment collects ultrasound echoes and Doppler signals to form images of organs, fetuses and arteries. Ultrasound technologists work directly with patients, and the field is rapidly expanding as new technology develops, providing a promising career path for industry newcomers. Many U.S. colleges offer programs in diagnostic sonography.

Loma Linda University

Loma Linda University, located 62 miles east of Los Angeles, offers Radiation Science Sonography programs to students who hold an associate's or bachelor's degree or are graduates of an accredited allied health program. The university's School of Allied Health Professions administers the programs and works directly with the adjacent Loma Linda University Medical Center. Graduates are eligible to take a national exam in their area of specialty to earn a credential such as Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS). The 24-month program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography & Vascular Technology accepts 10 to 12 students each fall and the 12-month Cardiac Sonography program accepts five students each year. Loma Linda University is a Seventh-Day Adventist health sciences institution that accepts students of any religious background and offers 55 programs of study.

Mayo School

The Mayo Clinic campus in Minnesota encompasses the School of Health Sciences (MSHS), in addition to an outpatient complex, two hospitals and research facilities. Over 50 ultrasound scanning stations are located throughout the campus and staff members performed 85,000 scans in 2008. The sonography program at MSHS is 21 months long and provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to become entry-level sonographers and technologists. The 12 students admitted each year are required to pass an exam prior to graduation that the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) administers. They will then receive a Certificate of Completion from the Mayo School of Health Sciences.
