The insurance license application can be completed online.
Insurance producers are licensed in New Jersey by the state's Insurance Department. A new online application procedure is available for obtaining a license, in which the state partners with the National Insurance Producer Registry. However there are several steps you must complete before you can tackle the online application.
Instructions
1. Contact the New Jersey Insurance Department's education unit to complete the required education course or obtain a waiver if you have education credits from another state. A list of approved insurance education providers is on the department's website.
2. Take the New Jersey producer licensing exam, if you have not gone through the waiver procedure. This is taken through PSI Exams Online (See Resources). Most producer exams are 210 minutes, and you must apply through the website for a specific appointment to take the exam at a testing center.
3. Schedule an electronic fingerprinting session through the Department's Live Scan program. Scheduling is done online (See Resources). You must complete the appropriate application form through the department's website, and take it to the fingerprinting session. Once you are fingerprinted, the department will undertake a criminal history review.
4. Decide if you wish to use a trade name, and ask for approval for the name from the department.
5. Complete the online application, through the National Insurance Producer Registry website.
