Get Over Shyness During A Gynecological Exam

Get Over Shyness During a Gynecological Exam

Most women are advised to see their doctor for a gynecological exam once a year. It's important for women to be screened for certain diseases such as cervical cancer. Although an exam is medically necessary, many woman are intimidated and embarrassed. Having your feet up in the stirrups and wearing a paper gown is not the most relaxing situation to be in. However, there are ways to reduce shyness during a gynecological exam.

Instructions

1. Learn what the examination is for. Most gynecological exams include a pelvic exam to check for any abnormalities. An exam may also include a pap smear to test for cervical cancer. A breast exam may also be performed. Knowing the importance of each test and looking at it from a medical standpoint may reduce shyness.

2. Ask your physician to tell you before she does a procedure. Having a doctor talk you through something may reduce an awkward feeling. Keep in mind if you are not comfortable with a certain procedure that you always have the right to refuse.

3. Consider going to a female physician. You may reduce shyness and be more comfortable during a gynecological exam with a woman doctor. Get information on which female doctors are accepting patients from your health insurance company. The insurance company should be able to provide information on doctors in your area, their gender and credentials.

4. Take a girlfriend along. It may reduce shyness to have a friend with you who can make you laugh at the situation or ease fears. Some women may want to be alone during a gynecological exam, but for others the company of a good friend may help.

5. Keep in mind a physician is a professional and has likely done hundreds of exams. It is an everyday occurrence to see a woman in stirrups for your doctor. They are not judging you or looking at the situation in a sexual way. They are viewing you as a patient in a clinical setting.
