Find A Doctor Or Specialist

Seek out a specialist if you have a specific medical condition or illness.

Finding yourself in need of medical treatment can be a frightening experience. The first thing you need to determine is the type of doctor you need to find. General practice doctors treat patients for common illnesses and medical conditions while specialists focus on specific medical needs, such as arthritis, diabetes, cancer, urinary issues, plastic surgery, infertility and more. Finding a doctor or specialist in your area is possible through several methods.

Instructions

1. Ask friends and family for referrals to doctors or specialists. People are not likely to refer you to someone unless they have had a good experience.

2. Call your current or previous doctor and ask for a referral to a specialist. A doctor's office processes referrals on a regular basis and will have a list of providers of all specialties.

3. Contact your insurance company if you have insurance. Your insurance company can provide you with a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of doctors in your area.

4. Visit the National Institute of Health website. Select the type of specialist you are looking for from the list. Enter in your zip code and view the resulting names of providers in your area.

5. Visit the WebMD website (www.webmd.com) to find a doctor or specialist in your area. Enter the type of specialist and the zip code to populate a list.
