Kansas Medical Schools

Choosing a medical school can be a challenging task, especially if you are limiting your search to a particular state or geographical area. Cost, reputation and location should all be factors you consider when applying to medical school. If you are looking for medical schools in the state of Kansas alone, however, your choices are limited to two primary institutions.

University of Kansas

Founded in 1880, the University of Kansas Medical School reached its current location in Kansas City in 1924 after relocating from the Lawrence campus. The medical school is part of a larger organization, the Kansas University Medical Center, which also includes the School of Allied Health, School of Nursing, Graduate Studies, the Kansas University Research Institute and several other research centers. The university offers students an opportunity to pursue a program of interdisciplinary research in biomedical sciences and a joint M.D./Ph.D. degree.

The other option for medical school students in the state of Kansas is the University of Missouri--Kansas City (UMKC). Founded in 1971, UMKC's medical school offers a six-year unique medical school program that allows students to combine liberal arts study with their medical studies and pursue their M.D. degree directly out of high school. The school offers programs in anesthesiology, surgery, radiology and 10 other specialty areas. The university also offers numerous fellowships in several different areas of study with the most common type for research in various aspects of pediatric medicine.

Comparing the Choices

Both the Kansas University School of Medicine and the UMKC School of Medicine offer students viable options to receive a quality degree in the medical field. When choosing a medical program, your first consideration should be whether you can specialize in the field in which you wish to practice. For instance, students wanting to open a plastic surgery practice would likely choose Kansas University over UMKC because the University of Kansas has a clinical department specifically devoted to that specialty whereas UMKC does not. While both schools have pediatric departments, UMKC offers a number fellowships that will assist with funding. Many of these fellowships are for one particular area of pediatric research and can provide students with much needed financial assistance. While there is funding available at the University of Kansas, it is not as readily available for pediatric research as it is at UMKC. When choosing a school, it is necessary to do your research and weigh as many of these factors as possible.
