For anyone who wants to become a professional massage therapist, distance learning is a limited option. Becoming a certified or licensed massage therapist almost always requires supervised, hands-on practice. Schools that offer distance learning massage programs also typically require that you spend time on site getting hands-on experience or allow you to arrange your own training.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Distance learning in massage therapy is a way to receive part of your massage education from the comfort of your home. You can complete the classes at your own pace and on your own schedule, plus you can save money by avoiding expenses such as childcare and commuting. The disadvantages include not having an opportunity to interact with and learn from other students or with instructors.

Most distance learning programs for massage are a combination of hard-copy course materials that you receive in the mail and online written material and videos. You typically have access to instructors or online student support.
Hands-On Training
Schools that offer distance massage training typically allow students to operate in one of three ways: complete the coursework at home and go to school for a period of time to receive hands-on training; do the coursework at home and attend a once-a-week or other periodic class on site for hands-on training; and be completely responsible for arranging their own hands-on training.
Continuing Massage Education
The options for distance leaning in continuing massage education are more varied, as students do not necessarily have to complete any hands-on training. Typically, students complete the study materials and then take an open-book test to receive continuing education credits. Distance learning continuing education courses are available entirely online, with home study materials combined with an online test or entirely at home with a mail-in test.
Considerations
If you want to become licensed or certified to practice massage in a specific location you must make sure that any education you complete meets the licensing or certification requirements of that organization. If you want to become nationally certified in massage therapy in the United States, your education must meet the requirements of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.
