American Universities Offering Courses In Forensics

Forensic anthropology scientists study old bones.

Hit TV shows like CSI and NCIS have made the study of forensics, also known as forensic science, increasingly popular. Forensic scientists apply scientific principles and methods to aid in criminal and civil investigations. Real life forensics may be a far cry from the glamour portrayed on the small screen, but many American universities now offer courses in forensics to a growing number of interested students.

Penn State at University Park

Penn State at University Park has an undergraduate degree program devoted to forensic science. According to Penn State, the forensic program encompasses a wide range of academic disciplines. Students explore biological, physical and mathematical sciences. Courses include forensic anthropology, forensic biology, forensic entomology and forensic chemistry. Students can also choose whether they want to specialize in forensic science, forensic medicine or forensic psychology.

University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi has a Bachelor of Science program in forensic chemistry. Forensic chemists use chemistry to analyze evidence in criminal investigations. According to the University of Mississippi, its program in forensic science can lead to careers as a crime scene investigator, forensic dentist, medical examiner, crime lab director, forensic pathologist, toxicologist, FBI investigator and ballistics analysts.

University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida hosts the National Center for Forensic Science. The National Center for Forensic Science is on the leading edge in forensics, and according to its website, the program provides innovative solutions to forensic science problems through an undergraduate program in forensic science. The University of Central Florida's forensic science program states that forensic science serves the justice system and forensic scientists may work with physical evidence like blood, hairs and fibers found at a crime scene.

Arkansas State University

Arkansas State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Forensic Science. ASU claims its program includes all sections in the American Academy of Forensic Science. The program at this university prepares students for careers in crime labs or at a federal agency. Students who study forensic science at ASU can also pursue medical school. The forensic science program at ASU has three options. Students can study general forensic science, or they can choose an emphasis in either chemistry or biology. ASU suggests students in high school who want to study forensic science should take plenty of math and science courses. Other career options for students who study forensic science include pursuing advanced degrees in chemistry, biology or pathology and teaching in all levels.
