Radiologic technologists are responsible for operating imaging machines and equipment and taking X-rays of patients. This profession allows you to work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, doctors’ offices, laboratories and diagnostic imaging centers. Some radiologic technologists even perform more complex duties, such as computerized tomography, or CT, scans, magnetic resonance imaging, or MRIs, and ultrasounds. With the proper education, training and skills, you can become a radiologic technologist.

1. Locate an appropriate radiography or radiology technology school to pursue your education. There are a variety of accredited colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools that can provide you with the education and training you will need to become a radiologic technologist. Depending on your current occupation, training, interests and career goals, you may choose to pursue a 1-year certificate, 2-year associate degree or a 4-year bachelor’s degree. 2. Apply for admission to the school of your choice. A college admissions counselor or adviser can walk you through the admissions process for that specific school. You may need to complete several steps before you can enroll in classes, such as submitting an application for admission, providing a copy of your high school transcript and/or college transcripts, and passing the college’s entrance examination.
3. Complete all of the requirements for the program in which you enroll. To become a radiologic technologist, you must successfully complete all of the required courses and receive an adequate amount of hands-on clinical training. Be prepared to take a variety of science and medical courses such as anatomy and physiology, physics, medical terminology, imaging principles, biology, patient positioning and medical ethics.
4. Take the appropriate examination for your license. Most states require you to pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification examination in order to become a licensed radiologic technologist. Although not all states require you to have a license to practice radiology technology, most states prefer that you have this credential. And having your license ensures employers that you have adequate training and knowledge about this career.
5. Receive proper recertification for your career. It is important to renew your initial certification by completing 24 hours of continuing education credits every 2 years. Your employer can tell you exactly which classes and workshops you should attend to complete the recertification process.
