Weight Gain
Many women gain weight in their breasts when they gain weight throughout the rest of their body. That is because breasts are mainly composed of fatty tissue, which increases when a woman consumes more fat. In addition, women also gain weight in their breasts due to more water retention, or "water weight," which especially occurs before and during their menstrual cycles. Having extra water weight can cause a woman to gain up to five lbs. in weight and have fuller breasts. In the same vein, weight loss in women often causes them to lose weight in their breasts as well.
Pregnancy
Nothing naturally increases breast size more than pregnancy. Not only do women gain weight during pregnancy, their breasts undergo huge spikes in estrogen that prepare them to breastfeed their baby. What causes this spike in estrogen originates from the placenta, which becomes bigger due to the developing fetus. Therefore, the placenta's enlargement alerts the brain to produce more estrogen, which causes the breast enlargement.
Hormonal Fluctuations
Many women also find that their breasts get bigger just before they menstruate. That is because their estrogen and progesterone levels increase in the days before their period, which causes their breasts to grow somewhat larger (perhaps about half a cup in bra size). Their breasts may also feel somewhat painful to the touch due to the concentrated hormones. However, during the first days of their period, their breasts usually return to their normal size because their hormone levels dip.
