Metropolitan Kansas City Community Colleges

Students in the Kansas City area have a number of options if they are looking for a community college education.


The Kansas City metropolitan area straddles the Missouri and Kansas border. There are community college options in the larger metro area on both the Kansas and Missouri side. For students looking for a two-year associate's degree, a technical certificate or courses in preparation for transfer to a four-year school, these community colleges provide a range of choices.


Kansas City Kansas Community College


Kansas City Kansas Community College offers university prep courses, associate's degrees, technical career training and community education, and has an annual enrollment of just over 6,000 students. The college offers vocational training programs in emergency medical technician and paramedic technician. In addition to business associate's degree programs, it also has programs in addiction counseling, fire fighting, mortuary science, forensic chemistry, journalism, general studies and veterinary medicine. Certificate programs in auto collision repair, property management and computer systems also are part of the curriculum.

Metropolitan Community College


Metropolitan Community College serves more than 18,000 students each year from five campuses spread throughout Kansas City, Missouri. The college provides a broad range of transfer programs that get students ready for the jump to a university or four-year college by structuring courses to take care of the first two years' workload. MCC also offers more than 80 degree programs for students looking for an associate's degree or a technical training certificate. Areas of study include agribusiness and turf management, textiles, hospitality management, child development, criminal justice, digital prepress, education, game development, geographic information systems, musical technologist, occupational therapy and industrial technology.

Johnson County Community College


Seven miles south of Kansas City on the Kansas side of the state line is Johnson Community College. JCCC is now the third-largest college in Kansas and its biggest community college. It provides programs for more than 20,000 students and an additional 15,000 local residents taking advantage of continuing education opportunities. The college provides a variety of transferable undergraduate credit courses to help students looking to move on to a university or four-year college and it also offers more than 50 associate's degree and certificate programs. The large selection of continuing education courses are designed to provide personal enrichment or training for local residents looking to upgrade their marketability in the work force. Johnson County's distance learning options also are available to students who cannot get to campus for their courses. JCCC's degree programs include accounting and tax preparation, automotive technology, biotechnology, civil engineering, Web development, early childhood education, fashion merchandising, physical therapy, nursing, interactive media, sleep technology, railroad operations and welding. The school offers a police academy certificate program, a sign language certificate program and a bed and breakfast management certificate program among its career training options.
