Sonography offers a range of employment opportunities.
There are many job opportunities in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Sonographers use high-frequency sound to examine internal body parts and organs to diagnose potential medical problems noninvasively. Many universities, technical institutes and even hospitals offer opportunities for you to start a sonography degree. When choosing the program that's right for you, be sure you understand the requirements of the program and your possibilities for future employment.
Instructions
1. Find a university, technical institute or hospital in your area that offers an accredited degree in medical diagnostic sonography. Many universities and technical institutes offer the option of a four-year bachelor's degree or a two-year associate's degree. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) lists all of the reputable, accredited university and technical institute courses available in the United States by state at caahep.org.
2. Research the institution that you intend to apply to. Make sure the program is reputable, with a high postgraduate job placement percentage and opportunities for hands-on experience (clinical rotations) as well as classroom experience. The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) recommends considering only programs that follow the minimum curriculum and clinical standards recognized by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). All CAAHEP-recommended programs qualify.
3. Make sure you meet all of the requirements for the institution that you are interested in before you start the application process. Most degree programs will accept students with a high school diploma or GED, but some programs require you to have an educational background with heavy emphasis on health and science. They may also require standardized tests like the ACT, SAT and/or SAT Subject Tests.
4. Send in the application, supplemental information (test scores, diplomas, etc.) and required fees before the listed deadline.
5. Decide on a concentration. According to the SDMS, those who choose to concentrate in cardiac, vascular or another specific branch of sonography and take the related classes have increased employment opportunities.
