Prevention Massage For Breast Cancer

Regular massage can help prevent and detect breast cancer, some believe.

According to Susun S. Weed, author of "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," breast massage helps to prevent breast cancer by improving the immune system and moving lymph fluids through lymph nodes under the arms. Breast massage also familiarizes the woman with the natural texture of her breasts, making breast self-exam easier and more accurate.

Cancer and the Immune System

According to Dr. Donny Yance, ND and author of "Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer," one of the main causes of cancer is a compromised or weak immune system. Dr. Jacqueline Fields, MD, of the Healing Gardens health center in Fort Collins, Co., agrees. In her article on the Healing Garden's website, "Cancer and Body Terrain," she says, "Most of my stage IV cancer patients appear to have their immune system so depleted that sometimes they are like AIDS patients."

Massage Strengthens Immune Function

Massage helps to reduce stress.

In his article on his website, "Five Reasons to Get a Massage Today," Dr.Joseph Mercola, the well-known alternative physician and best-selling author, says that massage increases blood flow and moves lymph fluid. Lymph fluid circulation removes toxins and waste from the tissues and improves the immune system. Massage of any part of the body, including breast massage, reduces the immune-damaging chemicals cortisol and noradrenaline, which are associated with stress.

Massage Oils

Your choice of massage oil helps strengthen the immune function of breast tissue and reduce stress. In her book, Weed suggests that best oils for breast massage are homemade from pomace oil, which is made from the pits of olives. It is inexpensive, and does not have a strong smell.

For maximum immune-boosting effect, infuse the oil with dandelion flowers. According to Weed, dandelion flower oil promotes deep relaxation of breast tissue, and will help strengthen the immune system when used regularly.

The Basics of Breast Massage

Start by ensuring you will not be disturbed. Lock the door. Consider lighting scented candles or incense if these things relax you. Pour the infused oil into your hand, and rub your hands together to warm the oil. Place your hands either at the outsides of your breasts or under them, and massage inward. Next, work from the collarbone down, and finally from the armpits in. Always massage toward the center of the breast, and only do what feels good to you. Pay attention to the feel of the breast under you hands, and recognize any fibroid lumps you may feel.

After Massage

After the massage, record any lumps you felt, or any uncomfortable feelings the massage uncovered. It is helpful to write in a journal about those feelings. Try drawing a map of your breast to record any lumps or uneven places.
