Orthopedic surgery is the branch of medicine that focuses on conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons treat cases including injuries, diseases and tumors. In order to become an orthopedic surgeon, doctors complete an undergraduate degree, four years of medical school and five years of residency training in orthopedic surgery.
Baylor College of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine is located in Houston, Texas. It houses the Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedic Surgery, which offers a five-year orthopedic residency training program. This program is limited to 25 people and has five concentrations of study. Students can focus on adult reconstruction, foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. A medical degree from an accredited medical school is the only prerequisite for the program, which starts on July 1 of each year.

The Medical College of Wisconsin in located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has a five-year residency program that focuses on one-on-one teaching methods. The program also allows students to learn in a variety of clinical settings. The students' orthopedic rotations take place in trauma centers, pediatric wards, private hospitals and community hospitals. Augusta, Georgia, is home to the Medical College of Georgia.
