Pink Ribbon Craft Ideas

The pink ribbon design has become an effective symbol for breast cancer awareness campaigners.

The not-for-profit organization Pink Ribbon has been promoting breast cancer awareness and supporting research into the disease since 1990. In that time, the pink ribbon itself, sometimes formed to create a "heart" shape, has become a potent symbol, worn by those looking to spread the word about breast cancer detection and raise money for cancer charities. It’s no surprise, then, that plenty of hobbyists have come up with craft ideas which incorporate the pink ribbon symbol.

Heart Bead Design

Intended for those more experienced with bead crafts, this design is demonstrated by Eri on the Jewelry Making Professor website (see References). The design incorporates a "heart" design with the classic pink ribbon woven into the heart, giving an already rewarding pattern a little bit more poignancy and meaning. The beads used in the example are pink and white Swarovski crystal beads, but other bead designs don’t have to use this type of bead, of course. Once completed, the bead heart can be affixed to a chain to create a necklace or else fashioned into part of a bracelet.

Hot Cloth

A hot cloth is an environmentally friendly craft that's useful around the home. You can put together a hot cloth featuring the pink ribbon design using a knitting kit and cotton yarn, typically in pink and white colors, as demonstrated by designs such as the one by Knitting Knonsense’s Rhonda on the Craft Bits website (see References), which shows a design that uses size-seven knitting needles.

Cross Stitch Design

Cross stitching is a popular craft and one that lends itself easily to pink ribbon designs. You can find free cross stitch patterns to copy at websites such as Craft Designs 4 You (see References), which gives a few variants on the pink ribbon heart design as examples of what can be achieved, including an easy and a smaller version. As well as having the pattern in front of you before you begin, you’ll need a few craft materials. These include a tapestry needle, white fabric and embroidery floss in two shades of pink; the basic pattern given recommends using light and dark pink shades.

Pink Ribbon Scarf

Perfect for those months when the weather is a little on the chilly side, especially if you’re out in that cold weather campaigning for breast cancer awareness, a scarf that incorporates the pink ribbon symbol into its design is a reasonably easy craft project as long as you can knit and perl. An example that uses VelvetSpun wool can be found on the Mom’s Budget website (see References).
