The Best Time To Do A Self Breast Exam

Breast self-examination is a method of assessing the breasts for early detection of breast cancer. A woman will follow a series of steps looking for any abnormalities such as lumps, swelling, irritations or discharge from the nipples. Breast self-examination is a way for women to act proactively regarding their health.

Age

Ideally, women should begin practicing breast self-examinations by the age of 20. This practice should continue throughout the rest of a women's life. Twenty is also the age women should start having regular clinical breast examinations.

Monthly Exams

It is best to complete the breast self-examination on a regular monthly basis. This frequency allows women to become familiar with the breasts, and it allows for early detection of any abnormalities. Routine care is important in keeping the breasts healthy.

Following Menstruation

Complete the breast self-examination approximately two to three days after a menstrual cycle. When menstruating, the breasts may swell and become sensitive to the touch, creating an inaccurate result from the self-examination.
