Iowa Xray Tech Schools

Prospective X-ray technicians must enroll in a radiography or radiologic technology program. Those who complete a program are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technology examination. Graduates are prepared for employment in hospitals, health clinics, physician's offices and urgent care facilities. According to Eastern Iowa Community College District, the median salary for those working in radiologic technology was between $36,900 and $45,000 per year.


Allen College


Located in Waterloo, Iowa, Allen College offers an associate's degree in radiography that prepares students for careers as an X-ray technician. Students must complete 80 credit hours -- 58 of which are within the major. The curriculum includes courses in radiographic procedures, medical terminology, patient assessment, pathology, imaging methods and radiation protection. Before enrolling in core curriculum courses, students must complete general education prerequisite courses in anatomy and physiology, composition, sociology, psychology and math.


Scott Community College


Scott Community College is located in Davenport, Iowa, and is part of the Eastern Iowa Community College District. Students enrolled in the radiologic technology associate's degree program have the option of specializing in nuclear technology, radiation therapy, angiography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance and computer tomography. In addition to academic courses in radiologic pathology, radiation protection, radiographic exposures and radiographic procedures, students must also complete a clinical practicum at a local medical facility.


Indian Hills Community College


Ottumwa is located in south central Iowa and is home to Indian Hills Community College. Students can seek an associate's of applied science degree in radiologic technology and can complete the program in two years. Students in the program learn to position patients, operate diagnostic equipment and assist physicians. The program offers students an opportunity to learn through academic coursework, seminars and a clinical practicum. To prepare for the ARRT exam, students have the option of taking a preparatory exam.


Iowa Central Community College


Located in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Iowa Central Community College offers a radiologic technology program that prepares students to perform imaging examinations and work in a medical facility. The courses cover topics in sectional anatomy, radiographic procedures, imaging, radiographic physics, medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology. Students are also required to participate in a clinical experience in a local medical facility and work and learn under the supervision of a professional radiologic technician.
