Drug Free Programs

Education is an effective method for preventing drug use.

Substance abuse is a serious problem in many communities. One of the most effective ways of preventing drug use and abuse is through drug abuse prevention programs. These programs take many forms, from school-based "lessons" on the dangers of drugs, to no-use policies for the workplace. These programs are most successful at preventing drug use and abuse when they focus on the community, the family and the individual.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Perhaps the most well known substance abuse prevention program is Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.). The D.A.R.E. program brings uniformed police officers into the classroom to teach about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The program strives to not only educate youths on the dangers of substance use and abuse, but also form a link of trust between the community and police department. D.A.R.E. is for children of all ages, from kindergarten to high school.

Operation Weed and Seed

Operation Weed and Seed is a program designed to control crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in high-risk and high-crime neighborhoods. The name Weed and Seed refers to the operation's two pronged approach: law enforcement officials "weed" offenders like gang members, violent offenders and drug dealers from Operation Weed and Seed neighborhoods, while education and community outreach programs "seed" positive influences in. Operation Weed and Seed is implemented in more than 250 communities in the United States.

Strenghtening America's Families

The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools is a partnership between the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) focusing on the family and the importance of the family in preventing and treating dangerous behaviors like drug abuse. Strengthening America's Families uses a variety of methods to educate youths about substance abuse, but primarily works with an at-risk youth's family members to create a positive and strong home environment.

Division of Workplace Programs

The Division of Workplace Programs supports employers in providing drug-free workplaces. Workplaces who utilize the Division of Workplace drug-free programs institute strict no drug use policies, provide substance abuse and awareness programs for their employees, and establish clear consequences for work place substance abuse. Employees working for companies who utilize drug-free workplace policies are eligible for substance abuse treatment referral and drug testing.
