Software For Barcode Readers

There are several sophisticated software to create, read and store bar code information.

Bar code scanning equipment and software are used to sort and categorize items, particularly goods and products in a store or warehouse. There are different types of scanning software that can be used in different ways depending on the purpose.

History

The first bar code scan for commercial purposes was performed in 1974 in a grocery store. Since then, different forms of bar codes have been put into use and the software used to produce and read them has become very sophisticated.

Bar Code Production Software

Bar code production software can help you make different bar codes for your inventory by creating a unique series and enabling you to print them out using your printer. The particular kind of bar code production software you want will depend on how you want the codes generated and printed. For example, some bar code software can work with a word processor and using the mail merge function, print an entire sequence of codes.

Bar Code Data Collection

Bar code data collection software syncs with a bar code scanner or scanner gun to read bar codes. These codes may be generated by a product supplier or self-generated. The particular collection software you want will depend on the scanner you are using.

Considerations

There are a number of considerations when choosing bar code scanning software and if you are choosing collection software, you may not need separate software, depending on the scanner you are using. Also, you will likely need a database program or other inventory software. There are specialized databases for bar code information, but something like Microsoft Access may be sufficient.
