Radiology Starting Salary

Radiologists use X-rays and other radiological imaging devices to view patients' bones and organs and aid in a diagnosis of disease. Some radiologists specialize in managing diseases like cancer, while others focus on general diagnostic procedures. Radiologists are among the highest paid physicians to start with, although their peers' salaries tend to catch up over time.

In-Demand Specialty

Jobs Employment Guide reports that radiologists are in high demand as of 2011. Thus, many hospitals offer high starting salaries to radiologists, although the salary rate can differ based on the radiologist's location and experience. Radiologists also do not have to worry as much about finding employment opportunities because they are in such high demand throughout the United States. Some radiologists can make upwards of $350,000 per year to start, according to Jobs Employment Guide; however, PayScale.com says that most radiologists make between $47,000 and $193,000 during their first year.

Bonuses

Salary estimations do not include bonuses. PayScale reports that most starting radiologists typically receive a year-end bonus of $2,500 to $3,900. In addition to bonuses, radiologists may receive other benefits such as cheaper health insurance or a 401k retirement plan. These benefits can slightly increase the amount of money a radiologist is considered to make per year.

Location

Radiologists who work in certain states tend to make more money than those who work in other states. As of 2011, radiologists in California and New York make the highest starting salaries. PayScale.com lists salaries by state regardless of experience; California radiologists make between $56,000 and $250,000 per year and New York radiologists make about $58,000 to $305,000 per year. In contrast, radiologists in Florida and Ohio make approximately $45,000 to $250,000 per year.

Employer Type

PayScale reports that radiologists who work for a private practice typically make more to start than their peers. Private-practice radiologists can make an average of about $61,000 during their first year, while those who work in hospitals only make about $47,000 per year to start. Radiologists who work for government-owned facilities make the least money to star, with an average of about $35,000 during their first year.
