Radiology technicians and technologists create diagnostic images with imaging technology such as magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray, computed tomography and mammography to assist physicians in the diagnosis of illness and conditions. States license radiologic technicians and technologists to ensure the safety of patients and reduce the exposure to dangerous radiation.
National Certification
The state of Missouri requires the radiology technician meet the requirements for training and evaluation set by a national certifying body, such as the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is a national certifying agency that requires individuals have the appropriate level of training to operate radiology equipment safely. Certification requires applicants meet the standards set by the agency for training, education and examination. The national organization requires candidates be of good moral background and disclose any criminal history or suspension of a state license before applying for certification. The agency investigates violations when determining eligibility for certification.
Education
The applicant for certification must complete an accredited education program that includes clinical training. The applicant must complete the program within five years before applying for certification. The education program will prepare students to operate radiography equipment and position patients, as well as establish safety procedures and communication with patients. The clinical portion of the education program allows students to learn under the supervision and direction of experienced radiographic technicians and technologists.
Examination
Applicants who meet the background requirements and complete an acceptable education program must pass an examination that assesses knowledge and skills in radiology. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists will mail the applicant a status report, which details the information for scheduling the examination within a 90-day timeframe. The applicant will have three opportunities to pass the examination within three years to qualify for certification and practice as a radiology technician in Missouri.
